Chapter 22

Xavier

Gracie agreeing to letting my driver bring her home rather than taking the subway took a huge weight off my shoulders. I couldn’t stand the idea of her going down there without anyone else with her. It was entirely possible Hank was just at the bottom of the steps or waiting on the platform knowing she had to come down there to get on the train. She didn’t mention seeing or hearing from him again since their confrontation on Saturday, but that didn’t make me feel better. If anything, it skyrocketed up the anxiety. I saw the way Hank was looking at her on the sidewalk. That wasn’t the look of a man who was just going to give up and walk away. He was going to go after her at some point, and the longer it took, the more on edge he was going to be.

If she hadn’t agreed to let my car bring her home, I was just going to go down into the subway with her. It would just be a meandering way home for me that evening. I would take the subway to her place and have my driver meet me there and bring me home. It wasn’t that far out of my way. Nothing would be too far out of my way to help protect Gracie.

Even with bringing her home and dropping her off, I managed to get to the market and make it back home with enough time to actually make a dinner for them rather than ordering out. Mom wasn’t going to be at the penthouse that evening. After everything that went on over the weekend, I sat Mom down on Sunday and told her my plan. She was stunned by it, but at the same time thought it was perfect. Mom agreed Gracie and I pretending to be married could be exactly what Hank needed to see to break him out of his fantasy world where he still had some claim on Gracie. She also agreed we wouldn’t be able to pull that off if she was living in the penthouse. Though the apartment she chose wouldn’t be ready for almost two more weeks, she found a temporary place she was willing to stay in for that time. It was strangely quiet in the apartment without her, but if everything worked out well, I wouldn’t be there alone for much longer.

Getting out all the ingredients for fajitas, I cranked up my favorite music and started cooking. While I chopped the peppers and onions, my mind filled with pictures of how the plan would work out. Of course, it meant Gracie wouldn’t be in her apartment or following the same schedule Hank had gotten used to. It meant us sharing the space, going to work together in the mornings, doing things like grocery shopping together on the weekends. But most of the images I entertained while I cooked involved Gracie and I cuddled up on the couch together binging our way through Netflix.
